About AR.info
AdaptiveReuse.info has been put together as an online resource and collection of the adaptive reuse process. This online collection focuses on case studies of projects that have found new uses for old abandoned buildings. Typically these buildings were old industrial plants and mills though any structure can find a new life. More recently, churches, shopping malls and utility plants have also been converted for new uses by communities.
Humankind has spent many hours and resources to create the built environment around us. These built elements define and symbolize our communities. They become part of the community. When a structure is vacated, it impacts the community as a whole. It is important for the community to see these spaces as opportunities rather than blight or problems. They can be the breeding ground for new and exciting developments, rather than social ills. AdaptiveReuse.info hopes to provide the information and background to build upon and promote this concept.
Merging the concepts of smart growth, sustainability, and historic preservation, adaptive reuse makes social, economic and environmental sense for any community. Adaptive reuse also comes in many forms:
- adaptive reuse of vacant buildings
- adaptive reuse of vacant land
- adaptive reuse of infrastructure
- ad-hoc/temporary use
